Tascam FIREONE Firewire Audio Interface Review

(More customer reviews)I recently upgraded to a MacBookPro with Logic 7 on it. I needed a control surface that was Firewire based and would allow good functionality and portability. This audio interface/control surface provides a nice touch. I went from an Ozone Midi controller to this because this one was Firewire-based AND I never was into using the keyboard. For my purposes, plugging a mic, guitar, bass and electronic drums this was a great option. It took a little bit of fiddling to work with a MacBookPro (with Tiger and Leopard) and involved a rollback of Firewire drivers/firmware which is available on the Tascam website.
Without the rollback, the control surface will not work (or will work unpredictably). This is a Mac/Logic 7 issue. Anyway, I'm pleased. It looks great, works great (after Fix for Mac OS X 10.4.10 FireWire) and seems very durable.
Time will tell.

Mackie 1202-VLZ3 12-Ch. Compact Recording/SR Mixer Review

(More customer reviews)Superb engineering at a very reasonable price is what I thought after using and testing the Mackie 1202. I work in a physics lab to which I took this mixer to see if it will perform to the level Mackie claims. To my surprise, mine exceeds Mackie's specifications: for example, they claim a very low 0.0007% distortion and linear response to 60000 cycles, mine far exceeds those specifications (measured on lab quality equipment). I also have a small home recording studio and work, part time, as a DJ and play in a small band. I needed a mixer with very low distortion, without costing a fortune, for my home studio and capable of handling mobile DJ work (MP3 from a computer) and work with a band as well so that is why I selected this unit. It is not specifically aimed at the DJ market-no cross fader-but works quite well with only a little bit of practice. Someone did some very careful thinking when designing this superb little mixer.

Behringer X1204USB 12-Channel Mixer Review

(More customer reviews)This little mixer has the professional quality I require and I'm using this mixer combined with Cubase 6 software. I am happy to be using this to finish up my vocals on a progressive rock project to be mixed by the famed Terry Brown(RUSH). The Mice Pres have a wonderful warm and forward quality to them. The ease of use of the board is helping me complete a few singles that I am working on to include a Rap tune that will be spit by a member of the famed band Digital Underground, and another to be sung by the #1 Billboard charting Latin pop star Viva Angelina Sky.
It was so easy to set up and begin working with. I exchange aif files with my clients and other musiles from around the world, that I work with, and everyone has mentioned they are loving the vocal sounds. I think it's the Mic Pres! The mix between studio applications and live possibilities are awesome, too. The portability gives one a lot of options. I received it in perfect timing for me to complete my session work that was in lockdown from my previous equipment breakdown. I ordered from the dealer, they shipped in in my desired timeframe, I had it hooked up and I was on a phone patch studio session on schedule! AWESOME!

Mackie Onyx 820i FireWire Recording Mixer Review

(More customer reviews)After an existing audio interface went bad, I ordered the Mackie Onyx 820i as a replacement (not from Amazon), setting out to love the thing. I did at first, but after noticing some limitations, I am exchanging it for a different setup. My biggest gripe is the low output to the DAW. At detent, the highest level captured in a waveform was -22dB. At full gain (firewire send is pre-fader, so gain is only option for adjusting level unless you route everything - and I do mean everything - through a preamp) I was capturing -16dB, regardless of instrument (this introduced a lot of noise when recording guitar). A follow up call to the vendor from which I purchased it revealed that other customers had noted the same characteristic. Some would argue that this is just fine when recording in 24-bit, but I'd prefer to make that adjustment on my own rather than having hardware make the decision for me. Gripe #2 - no control panel. The only setting you can adjust outside of the DAW software is buffer size.
Maybe this thing needs someone smarter than me at the wheel, but all the same, I'm going with a different interface.
