Their selection of genres is great and it's AWESOME for the people who have "music stuck in their head" but no skills to create the sounds they want. You can just as easily create a 16 minute techno epic as you can a full orchestra musical score for an indie film your friend creates.

ACID Music Studio 7 Review

(More customer reviews)I will try to make this brief. This is a easy program to use if you are experienced or just learning(like myself). The program pretty much spells everything out for you. But for a program that is based around music it limits you if you do not have the full version of Acid Pro(which is about 300 dollars). For example, if you are recording multiple tracks, you need to create mixing busses. But the program does not save your busses unless you have Acid Pro, so if you record something that has lets say 25 tracks all asigned to busses and then you save it, once you open the project back up all those busses are gone and the program tells you an error occured and it then tells you to buy Acid Pro so this will not happen anymore. This is very frustrating, if you make any projects that involve complex mixing, you basically need to leave your computer on until you finish your work and never want to touch it again, unless you love remixing stuff. There is also a strange thing where you can't automate panning and volumes from the busses, you have to pull up an "envelope" on the track and create bullet points to adjust these things. I find it to be tedious and strange, when other porgrams such as Pro Tools allow you to automate much easier. Overall this is a decent program, but it has its frustrations and does not work fully unless you want to buy the full 300 dollar program.

(More customer reviews)I am a professional audio producer who has worked with Sound Forge for ten years. Please believe me when I say this is an excellent audio program. With Sound Forge, you can record and edit mono or stereo files, and in that realm there is not much you can't do. You can adjust the volume, speed, pitch, equalization, remove noise, cut, paste, play the audio backwards, turn the file upside down, add reverb or other effects and much more. You can also use it as a converter and turn WAV files to MP3, or a dozen other file types. If you are recording and editing on mono or stereo files, you can't go wrong with Sound Forge. The program is NOT, however, a multi-track editor. If you want to add voice over music or sound effects over voice, you need a multi-track editor, NOT Sound Forge. This program is perfect for voice talent who send raw audio to producers, or people wanting to do file conversion. The built in software in Windows cannot do 1% of what Sound Forge can do. It is unfair that a person gave Sound Forge a bad review because he couldn't multi-track with it. That's not what it does. If you had to move across town and you rented a two-seat roadster, would you complain that your king size bed didn't fit? Obviously it's the roadsters fault and the Mazda Miata must now get a one star rating. Trust me, this is an excellent program use by countless professionals.

What to do?
If you are not going to need scoring features and are actually on a budget- and more importantly - don't want to spend 2 months and 934 curses to try to learn a "totally new concept in software", then Acoustica's Mixcraft 4 is the EASY best choice.
You know when you work with good musicians, they are good because they are "musical"..not robotic? Mixcraft is musical. It is chock-full of amazingly musical sample loops in dozens of styles. It has incredibly deep and satisfying virtual instruments..tons of them. It handles VST instruments -free all over the web. It does midi real easy and records off of USB audio streams from a synth or USB audio digitizer. It has lots of internal effects too.
You will literally be making killer songs the first night. They can be all yours, or all theirs. This package is exactly what the normal home musician needs. It replaces thousands of dollars worth of hardware. My 16 track Akai HD recorder is now totally superfluous. You will need at least a Dual-Core processor and 1GB ram. I am running it on my Acer Netbook and it actually still does just fine. With a better PC, you can layer Canyon-deep sounds..and create beautiful music.
Look at the price. It is a joke for what you receive. If I had ripped this software, I would have bought the downloaded version in two days.
These guys have created a spot-on masterpiece and priced it as a bargain-basement deal.
Get it..and be making music..not beating your head against some 300 page manual.

Acoustica Mixcraft 5 Audio MIDI Music Recording Software V 5 Review

(More customer reviews)I used to think that if it wasn't expensive then it obviously wasn't as good ... but with Mixcraft I have to take that back! I own Acid 7 and I do like it, however this software just seems more intuitive. I also own Cubase 5, although I don't use it (it just doesn't **feel** right to me .. if that makes sense). And I've run through a demo of Live 4 and 5 ... and I just don't want to wrap my head around that one ... maybe I'm lazy who knows ...
If you intend to do serious professional recordings with pristine mixdowns then I can't help you ... Mixcraft may not be as good in that regard ... but if you're laying down midi tracks with audio files, maybe some loops and putting together some vocals, layering in some VST effects or Instruments ... then this software is honest to goodness as good as, and probably easier than, anything else out there. (and if you're producing professional audio stuff then you're already using Protools anyway).
I've been a faithful Acid user since version 3, and I will probably continue to stubbornly stick with it, but I can tell you that this software is going to definitely start taking up some of my time. For example, one comparison between the two ... if I have a project laid out in Mixcraft and I decide that I want to insert a short midi file that I've saved on my computer it's just a matter of a right-click and choosing the file ... done ... but in Acid it just seems like I have to jump through hoops to insert some midi to it ... this might seem trivial but to me I want a program that's created from a musical perspective, not a programming one ... it's just my pet peeve (and I'm a programmer too ... !)
Oh, one thing negative that I have found with Mixcraft ... in the Notation View midi editor I have crashed the program more than once by apparently clicking too fast when adding/deleting notes ... if they could make this more stable I can honestly say that I would finally drop Acid as my main sequencer of choice...
I really like the way Mixcraft looks and feels. To me this is not about functionality because all of the big names pretty much do the same stuff ... for me this is about feeling at ease in my little home studio and not getting frustrated with memorizing steps and menu options ... and I really hate the idea of buying those learning DVD's just to be able to use my software ... I just want to JAM!
